Recessed Lighting Tips

Recessed lighting adds extra light and warmth to a space without obtrusive fixtures.

Recessed lighting adds extra light and warmth to a space without obtrusive fixtures. If you’re planning to upgrade to recessed lighting, here are some tips to help get the most out of the new upgrade.

Spacing of the lights is important

Carefully considering the spacing of recessed lights can make or break the room’s ambiance. For instance, placing the lights three feet apart might make the room too bright and harsh on the eyes. However, doubling up the distance to around six feet apart will give the area a softer yet powerful feel.

Make kitchens and other work areas brighter

Unlike bedrooms and other private areas, adequate lighting in the kitchen and other work areas is slightly different. First, it’s best to space the lights in these areas much closer to each other because these spaces need more lighting to ensure a homeowner can see as they work. Usually, spacing the lights three to four feet apart does the trick because ample light is required to help get the job done.

Also, if lights are on a work desk, don’t point them directly at the surface because that can be unbearable to the eyes. Instead, place the lights at an angle.

Avoid having lights near the wall

The proximity of the lights to the wall can make a huge difference. Having the lights too close to the wall brings out bright spots and harsh shadows that are not pleasing to the eye. On the other hand, the further they are from the wall, the softer the lights’ glow, thus bringing out the best of recessed lights.

Avoid using recessed lights only

Using only recessed lights to light up the room is usually not a good idea. The lighting is just too bright. Instead, consider complementing them with other light sources like floor lamps and sconces to soften the ambiance. A dimmer switch can also soften the sharp shadows and light.

Don’t forget the fan!

If you have a ceiling fan, don’t put the recessed lighting too close because it will create a strobe effect that can annoy the eyes. Instead, place the lights approximately 18 inches away from the fan and see if that strobe effect goes away. If it doesn’t, keep adjusting the light until all the strobe effect is gone.

It’s personal

Making the most of recessed lights comes down to striking a balance between what’s not too bright or dark. And while there are countless tips about how one should arrange their recessed lights, it all depends on individual needs and preferences.

Recessed lighting can bring out the magical side of a home like you’ve never seen before. To upgrade these lights correctly, don’t hesitate to contact experts for help.
