How to Use Christmas Lights Safely

Christmas lights can put the home at risk of blackout and fire when misused.

The glittering Christmas lights add magic to the holiday season and make the home look more inviting and cheerful. From illuminating the Christmas tree and decking up the halls and corridors to sparkling up the outdoors, lights are an indispensable element of seasonal décor. However, Christmas lights can put the home at risk of blackout and fire when misused.

With electrical problems being the reason behind one of three residential Christmas tree fires, it becomes essential to stay careful and practice proper safety precautions to reduce potential hazards. This post discusses a few tips to alleviate worries and ensure the safe use of Christmas lights for an enjoyable holiday season.

Inspect and test all the lights

Use old lights carefully, as they may be electrically unsafe. Check the strands of light before plugging in for damage and loose wires. Toss out lights that are too old, cracked, frayed, and look worn out. Test all the lights for flickering or dead bulbs and use replacement bulbs of the same type.

Use LEDs

When buying new lights, choose LED lights over traditional incandescent lights. LEDs operate at low voltage, use significantly less electricity, and generate minimal heat, which reduces the risk of shock, fire, and burns. They are also more durable and environmentally friendly and last longer.

Do not use indoor and outdoor lights interchangeably

Always use lights designed for specific use. Outdoor lights can withstand the outdoor weather. For outdoor use, check the label and only buy lights designed for outdoors. Never use indoor lights as a substitute for outdoor lights. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully before installing lights.

Fasten the lights securely

Outdoor light strands can come loose and become an electrical hazard if not appropriately fastened. Use insulated hooks specially made for hanging Christmas lights instead of nails, staples, or screws. Ensure that the lights stay out of reach of kids and pets. Never place wires under carpets, furniture, or in windows and doorways.

Never overload

Prevent overloading the electrical sockets by spreading the lights across multiple circuits. Plugging in too many strings in a single outlet can cause overheating and increases fire risk. Instead, check the strands' wattage and the circuit's maximum watt capacity to ensure safe usage. Also, consider using power strips with a circuit breaker.

Use GFCI outlets to plug outdoor lights

Plug all outdoor lights into GFCI outlets. A GFCI outlet offers safety and protection and shuts off the electric supply if it detects the presence of water in the system to avoid electric shocks.

Turn off the lights

Never leave the Christmas lights unattended or on all the time. Always switch off or unplug the Christmas lights before signing off for the night or leaving the house to save money and avoid any safety issues. Get an automatic timer to ensure the lights turn off for some time during the day.

Other tips for safe Christmas light use

  • Use surge protectors to prevent damage if there is any voltage fluctuation.

  • Use extension cords smartly.

  • Buy a fire-resistant Christmas tree when getting an artificial tree or if buying a real tree, choose the freshest and greenest tree.

  • Avoid overlighting the Christmas tree.

  • Plug the lights into the nearest outlet.
